Federation of St Bede's and St Bernadette Catholic Schools

Safeguarding

Safeguarding children is everyone’s responsibility

Everyone at the Federation of St Bede’s and St Bernadette Catholic Schools is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. We are fully committed to ensuring that consistent, effective safeguarding procedures are in place to support families, children and staff at both schools.

We follow the procedures set out by the Lambeth Safeguarding Children Partnership (LSCP), which is made up of the Metropolitan Police Borough Command for Brixton and Southwark, Lambeth’s Clinical Commissioning Group and the London Borough of Lambeth. We also take account of the statutory guidance - Keeping Children Safe in Education, September 2022.

What is Safeguarding?

Safeguarding is the action that is taken to promote the welfare of children and protect them from harm.

Safeguarding means:
• protecting children from abuse and maltreatment
• preventing harm to children's health or development
• ensuring children grow up with the provision of safe and effective care
• taking action to enable all children and young people to have the best outcomes.
• Safeguarding children and child protection guidance and legislation applies to all children up to the age of 18.

What is Child Protection

Child Protection is part of Safeguarding and promoting welfare. It refers to the activity that is undertaken to protect specific children who are suffering, or are likely to suffer, significant harm.

Cause for Concern

Our first priority is, of course, your child’s welfare and the school is required to take any reasonable action to ensure the safety of its pupils. However, there may be occasions when we have reason to be concerned that a child may be subject to ill-treatment, neglect or other forms of abuse. We will ensure that our concerns about a child are discussed with his/her parents/carers first unless we have reason to believe that such a move would be contrary to the child’s welfare. In this case, school is obliged to follow the Child Protection procedures established by the Lambeth Safeguarding Children Partnership
